7 Reasons to Add the EQuIP Rubric to your NGSS Lesson Planning Toolbox

Not sure if that lesson is really NGSS aligned? Enter the EQuIP Rubric. A MUST for creating effective, efficient, and engaging NGSS lesson plans. Below I list 7 reasons why.

I’ll admit it.

When I first started teaching science, my basic lesson planning formula was:
  1. Front load vocabulary.
  2. Teach content from the textbook (usually in an outline form).
  3. Find some fun hands-on activities that confirmed what we just read (or even just slightly connected).
It's true. My “hands on” activities were more fluff than substance.

Let me give you an example: Volcanoes

We made beautiful model volcanoes that all looked the same (cone-shaped and brown) with a small PVC pipe in the middle to fit a test tube. Something like this:
"All models are wrong, but some are useful" (Spoiler alert: This is not one of them)

Then, we I poured pre-made mixtures into the tubes to model three different types of eruptions--low viscosity; medium...

Empower Your Students: Give Them the Keys to Science and Engineering with the Crosscutting (Key) Concepts

The seven crosscutting concepts in the NGSS deepen our students’ understanding of the disciplinary core ideas and help develop their scientific literacy by uniting the core ideas throughout the fields of science and engineering.

To help make the crosscutting concepts (and therefore the disciplinary core ideas and practices) more accessible to her students, one teacher in Kansas, Dr. Robin Wooten, created these infographics to model the crosscutting concepts as the “keys to unlocking the mysteries of the universe” (Download your own copies below).

Dr. Wooten states:

“As science teachers well know, the importance of the crosscutting concepts is not merely that they apply across the domains of science and engineering, but that, because they “address the fundamental aspects of nature, they also inform the way humans attempt to understand it."

 Consequently, the ...
